My name is Nicholas H.O. Tolvanen. Or Hot for short. This abbreviation, sadly, is not descriptive. My parents decided to split my worldly title perfectly in half, (be that on purpose or not), just like I myself am a half-and-half creature. From my mother’s side I got N and H, while from my father’s, O and T. Anglo and Finnish respectfully.

The focus, however, of this blog shan’t be me, good reader, nor my names, for they don’t really matter. This new one being one in a long list of pen names I have. Though I do intend to share more of myself in posts like these, the focus of this blog is my project…

The Limbo Chronologies©

To start, and to explain myself a little, just for context’s sake, I’m a twenty-six and counting as of yet unpublished author. I’m sitting on a finished Sci-fi novel manuscript that I’m trying to get traditionally published, and I’m starved of readers.

The Limbo Chronologies, on the other hand, are something I’ve scribbled and sketched about since I thought up the titular main character, cyborg gunslinger and adventurer, Beaufort ‘Buddy’ Limbo©, at the age of thirteen.

The thing is, due to teenage angst and rocky adolescent and early adult years, I never got around writing his adventures down properly. They only existed in my head, until I finished the third draft of my novel in fall of 2024.

Taking the advice of better authors than me, I took a break from the manuscript and decided to work on something else.

That’s when it clicked.

I’d inadvertently written the prologue, (ancient history from Buddy’s perspective) to the setting in which Buddy’s adventures take place. (A world filled with wastelands, cyborgs, genetically crafted monsters, walking intelligent machines, and factions that are in a constant state of strife.)

Don’t worry, you are not required to be acquainted with my novel to understand Buddy’s story, seeing as they have a couple thousand years in between.

DISCLAIMER: No AI or other LLMs have been used to write, edit, proofread or tamper The Limbo Chronologies or this blog post, or blog posts to come.

I have never used, and never will I use, these kinds of applications or software in my creative process. 

(I will probably rant about this topic in coming posts.) 

 My Goals

Though I am TERRIFIED at the notion of stepping into the discerning and critical gaze of the public, I shall embark on this journey anyways. I'm putting myself out there. This blog is an effort to share this story with you anonymous lights in the void, (no matter how scary you are), and better myself as a writer.  

I’ve already finished book 1 (part 1.) of the Chronologies, coming in at six chapters, and I intend to share these with you on either a weekly or biweekly basis as I write new, and edit current material. Chapters will be released first as separate pages on this blog, then later, after revisions and edits, they will be compiled into a larger document.

Blog posts themselves will be a kind of development log, dev log, dev blog, etc.

You get the idea.

My long term goals are, of course, to publish the Chronologies once finished. Be that through KDP or Ingram, I’ve yet to decide. Many other Ideas have pinked and bounced around my cavernous skull, but they are for a later date.

Rights and Licensing 

For those of you who know, I’m releasing drafts of The Limbo Chronologies in a similar manner in which Brandon Sanderson did with WARBREAKER. And I’m borrowing from him in explaining how I’m licensing this book.

I will also be adding an image under each Chapter of the book just as a reminder. (See Rights explanation) (Until I figure out how to embed it into the blog background.) 

All of this means that:

  1. You are free to share this book with anyone. HOWEVER, you are not allowed to change the posts or documents or profit from their distribution.

  2. You may print copies of the work for personal use. BUT, again, you may NOT profit in doing so.

  3. You may not change the text of the work in any way or imply that you wrote the book or anything of that nature.

  4. No derivatives. I don’t want people adding chapters to the book or altering the work in any way. Nor am I providing exemptions to fanfics. (Explanation in 5.) I do encourage fan art, though, provided you do not attach it to the documents, and clearly explain that the art is NOT mine or related officially to the project.

  5. Until I say otherwise, I am NOT providing exemptions to fanfics, (this goes under the no derivatives clause), because as of yet, I’ve not fully brought to life all of my notes, and thus if it were to happen that someone wrote a fanfic similar to that which I’ve already written, but not published, I’d be in quite the pickle. (Basically, I don’t want someone to write a fanfic, then sue me for compensation if something similar comes up in the official project.) I don’t want to, nor do I intend to steal anyone’s ideas. If you were to write something anyway, if it related to my work in any way, you waive all rights to that work.

  6. If you give feedback or suggestions regarding this work via email, a separate forum, (not created yet) or in the comments, you waive all rights to those suggestions and waive all rights to compensation for your help. Feedback is necessary, and always welcome. However, don’t sue me if I actually decide to take some suggestions.

I will be adding an about page of yours truly, and the aforementioned forum page at some point. For now, enjoy.

Writing is hard. Even now, as I type into this blank docx file, I struggle to come up with the proper words to describe just how hard it is. It becomes far more difficult, at least for me, when writing something like this, instead of prose. Project Update: Steady as she goes

Time for another post! Welcome, you faceless reader! You’ve probably noticed chapter two in the sidebar. Perhaps you’ve already read it. Perhaps you enjoyed it. Thank you, regardless. I just finished part two’s third chapter’s first draft, (what a mouthful), and I find myself in a weird spot. Personal Now that I’ve taken it upon myself to start this Blog and to post at least semi-regularly, I feel as though an element of carelessness regarding the story has been stymied. That’s not to say that I’m careless, or that I don’t take my writing seriously. Rather, I feel as though my headspace is different when writing part two, compared to when I was writing part one. In a way, I’ve gone against the ‘writing with the door closed,’ modality, as Stephen King puts it. The thought of everything I write being, not for me personally, but for everyone, does something to the wrinkly fleshy bits in my noggin.
