I Don't Like Flying

Hello, dear Reader,

Back at it again! Just about an hour ago I stepped aboard the trusty-old-boat and I’m about to commence another six weeks.

But what’s different?

WELL! GLAD YOU ASKED!

Storytime:

I left yesterday around 17:30. My flight from Oulu to Helsinki was delayed by an hour, so I was likewise an hour late to my hotel. Otherwise, no issue. Got all my luggage and carry on and didn’t lose anything on the way. (subtle foreshadowing). This morning our first flight left at 6:35, BUT it was delayed by a scant 15 minutes due to issues they didn’t specify. We had a connecting flight to our destination with a layover of 55 minutes, and the airport where it left from was…

COPENHAGEN

If any of you readers have been to Copenhagen airport YOU KNOW how horrible that place is. It is so… so, big…

Anyway! We touch down; we wait in the cramped airplane aisle for around ten minutes, as one does when waiting to be let off; we finally get off and after a 5 minute bus ride we quick-walk/jog to our gate. At the gate a stuffy attendee was complaining that he had to close the gate soon. Newsflash, pal, we were delayed. Not our fault. My colleagues and I board just in time and not ten minutes later the plane’s wing-propellers cycled up, and we were on our way.

Now. Now now now… we saw our luggage be put into a separate trolly when we waited for the bus to fill up. We SAW them. Four pieces of luggage. Scant four pieces.

45 minute flight later, we are at our destination. We get out. We walk to the luggage conveyor. The light flashes. We hear a tone indicating that soon it would start spitting out bags and cases.

We wait.

And we wait.

People come and pick up their stuff, then they leave.

And we wait.

Then the conveyor stops…

Dear Reader. I only have my carry on with me. I have only one pair of socks and boxers. Luckily I keep the most important stuff in my carry on, but man… this sucks.

On the bright side, they have POSSIBLY been brought over on the flight following ours, and POSSIBLY will be ferried out to our anchorage spot, so I am asking you all to keep thine fingerse crosséd for me. Also, no more dog watch! Due to fluctuating placements on board, I’ve been stationed on the watch that has the most humane work/rest hours! 8-12!

So, there’s a silver lining in everything.

No new chapter today, but next week I’ll have 5-4 ready for you. At the moment I’m fine-tuning my query letter for my novel and possibly will be working on that as well as my thesis, so I’m pretty swamped.

Thank you for your understanding and your silent support.

I’ll see you next Saturday.

(Addendum 19/7/26: For those of you worrying, we received our luggage later that evening, so I now have clean clothes once more.)
