I'm Still Here
Hello, dear Reader,
Apologies for being absent last week post-wise. The most keen-eyed of you have seen that chapter 8 is in the sidebar, and ready to read, which means today you are entitled to something special.
But before we get into that I want to start off by explaining why I didn’t post. I preface with an acknowledgment that one of the reasons is just a bad excuse. That reason being an existential ennui and feeling of hopelessness when it comes to AI.
By this I don’t mean that I see myself as competing with people who use generative AI models and LLM software, rather, something that relates to those abominations. A thought, if you will, which I’ve kept naively locked away in the sub-basement of my maailmankatsomus. And without further preamble it is this: the thought that, even now, ever since my first post, everything I’ve written has been scraped by those cancerous corporations and their parasitic programs.
Writing TLC has up till now been extremely fulfilling, but knowing how the internet works, especially now with the recent news of AI companies buying, then DESTROYING old manuscripts and out-of-print books, has thrown me into a quiet despair.
I am truly grateful of you few who are here, as I’ve communicated before. I just feel very alone and very small with this project that, ultimately, has a high likelihood of disappearing into the vacuous maw of that behemoth machine that is AI, and then ultimately will be spat out as something novel. For, remember, AI doesn’t create, it plagiarizes.
The Other Reason
for my absence is that I FINALLY read through the notes from my beta reader regarding my first and most precious project. And those notes have sent me SPIRALING! (With an upwards trend, thank God).
Last time I was out at sea I went through my project in a fifth draft mindset, only to have the story remain the same, with the notable exception of swapping the place of one chapter. But after these notes… WOW!
It’s like I’m back in that root file in my brain! I can’t express how illuminating (and humbling) reading valid criticism of your work is. I understand now.
Without spoiling. The novel is comprised of three parts. 8 chapters, 10 chapters, and 8 chapters, squished between a pro- and epilogue. (I think I’ve said this before). And the BIGGEST and, lets be honest, the most accurate, comments I got was that part 1, the first 8 chapters, drags, and has trouble getting to the point.
The craziest part: I’ve simultaneously, unconsciously, known, and not known this! My own failings and distractions have made me push the thought away that a drastic change is needed, but my eyes are open!!
The only problem: Complete rewrite and restructure of part 1. And that will take time.
Itaque,
I’m here to announce two things, (for my life goes by twos), and they are as follows:
I’m to return to sea for six weeks either tomorrow or Monday for six weeks, and throughout that time you will not be hearing from me as before. I will be, in between working hours, fervently going through and deconstructing and reconstructing part 1 of my project, to have it finally, truly, ready. It is the last major thing I need to do, and from then on I can confidently say that I’ve done everything. (But who knows, I thought so before, too).
The second: I have release the epilogue to part 1. And soon after I will be updating the draft of part 1 and renaming it to Draft 1.1. It will include all five minor arcs in their first draft form, and, of course, the interludes and epilogue.
So I have only two things to ask of you, dear reader:
I cannot force you to wait and remember, but I ask that you do. I’ll be back in six weeks, hopefully with news of progress. The second thing is that you spread this around, if just to one person who you know enjoys this flavor of fiction. Spread the Chronologies like the plague, so that we can show the world that a lonesome guy can get his books out to everyone without a cent or penny spent.
My love of writing and reading was given to me for free, and I will share both for free.
Thank you, Dear Readers, for your patience and understanding.
I’ll see you next month...
